There has been a rescheduling to Jan. 8 of the special Yucca Valley Town Council Meeting regarding a General Plan Amendment to rezone a Hillside Reserve to subdivide into four lots instead of one house per 20 acres. That meeting had been scheduled for Dec. 17 and was canceled due to weather.
Residents are concerned this could be a starting point to set precedence for further development of the town's remaining Hillside Reserves. Hillsides buffer lands and ecological linkages. Also, the proposed lot #4 is situated at the base of an alluvial fan. This project is at the most southern end of Valley Vista at Onaga, where there have been big problems with water runoff.
UPDATE: Apparently this issue will NOT be on the Jan. 8 agenda after all.

Alert! Native Plant Protection - Joint Yucca Valley Town Council/Planning Commission Study Session
Native Plant Protection will be the only item on the agenda for the joint Yucca Valley Town Council/Planning Commission Study Session on Thursday, October 2, 2008, 6:00 pm, at the Yucca Valley Community Center.
The stated purpose of this meeting is two-fold:
- Compare and contrast the existing and draft [Native] Plant Protection & Management Ordinances.
- Based upon Town Council direction, to further define [Native Plant] Design and Development Standards to be included in Section 89.0130 of the Draft Ordinance.
Please attend this meeting and make known your views on Native Plant Protection. Without public concern and enforceable ordinances, the wholesale destruction of native plants and wildlife habitat will continue.

Stadum project returns to Planning Commission tonight
The Yucca Valley Planning Commission will review Yucca Valley Homes LLC (Stadum/Fomotor) Concept Plan based upon prior Planning Commission and Town Council comments.
All four previous attempts to gain passage of the Stadum/Fomotor project have been rejected because of clear-cutting (mass grading) of the two 18.3-acre parcels. In each case, the Planning Commission sent the project back to the developer with clear instructions to re-submit plans which retained as many native plants undisturbed as practicable.
The developer is again attempting to gain acceptance of its Concept Plan. Will this new plan incorporate the Planning Commission and Town Council directions to save native plants?
Please attend the Yucca Valley Planning Commission meeting August 19, 2008, 7 p.m. at the Yucca Valley Community Center.
Add your voice for the preservation of native plants and the maintenance of our rural character.

YV Council steps up, sends Stadum back to Planning Commission
According to an attendee's report, last night the Yucca Valley Town Council rejected an appeal by developer Bob Stadum, sending his Yucca Valley Homes project back to the Planning Commission. The vote was 4-1, with Councilmember Frank Luckino opposing.
Per our source, Mayor Bob Leone castigated Stadum for an obvious political move of bringing the project to the Council and not even attempting to work with the Planning Commission. Stadum had three times failed to present alternatives to mass-grading of the 60 acres, a plan that did not meet Town regulations.
Could the Council finally be getting the message that residents want grading regulations followed?

Alert! Stadum Project Appeal Tuesday, July 8!
Note: This is the hearing that had to be postponed on June 25 because the Wal-Mart Supercenter hearing went so late. The Stadum Project ("Yucca Valley Homes") is for 90 homes on 60 acres and would include mass grading. - ChrisC.
Greetings Members and Friends of MBCA,
The Yucca Valley Town Council is considering the "appealed" Yucca Valley Homes LLC (Stadum Project) that was denied by the Planning Commission on recommendation of Town Planning staff.
The applicant had three chances to present alternatives to mass grading of the two twenty-acre parcels at Acoma Drive and Joshua Lane. They basically told the Planning Commission to "take it or leave it". The Planning Commission denied it.
The Town Council had a special meeting about "Rural", "Lot sizes" and "Mass Grading" on May 15th. There were more than three hundred people there and by the show of hands in support of statements made, about 90% present were in support of stopping "mass grading".
Bob Stadum and Philip Fomotor didn't want to take notice of this local uprising, and we don't know if all members of the Town Council did either.
A test of the Native Plant Ordinance "as is" is coming to the Yucca Valley Town Council on Tuesday, July 8th, at 6:00 pm. Please attend this meeting if possible and make your concerns known to the Yucca Valley Town Council.

Yucca Valley preparing to face the future?
It was standing room only as over 300 crowded in last Thursday for the public study meeting in "a beginning effort to come to terms with two major issues: mass grading and the zoning that determines residential lot sizes." Rebecca Unger's report in the Hi-Desert Star:

Packed with an impassioned populace, the Yucca Room has rocked lately as housing tracts and the Wal-Mart Supercenter get the full effect of “public review.” However, underlying these raucous lessons in civics is a dawning realization that town growth and quality-of-life issues are colliding over Yucca Valley’s guiding document, the General Plan.
Approved and adopted Dec. 14, 1995, this set of codes provides goals, policies and strategies “to guide the development of the Town and to preserve its valued assets and resources.” And like the national Constitution, the interpretations of this local document become vast battlefields upon which tortoise and townhouse duke it out.

Starting with their upcoming strategic planning meeting, [the Council] will seek to give direction to staff to revisit this venerable document. By mid-June the General Plan should be squarely in their sights.
No action was taken on the grading and zoning issues.

Thursday night rumble
Reminder: The Mayor has called a special Yucca Valley Town Council meeting TONIGHT, May 15, at 7:30 p.m. on the topic of clear-cutting and mass grading. This is of critical importance. Be there!! More info here.
But also today (2-8 p.m.) will be an open house sponsored by Wal-Mart at the Community Center. This attempt to sell the warmer and fuzzier new SuperCenter to the citizens of Yucca Valley is described in Wednesday's Hi-Desert Star. It would appear from Rebecca Unger's article that company PR hacks are quick to trot out as their softsoap centerpiece the controversial Adam Werbach, former Sierra Club president and now environmental consultant to WalMart.
Werbach seems to have some earnest ideas on spreading environmental education. But unfortunately, whatever it is he believes he's doing, the result of his trade with WalMart was exactly predictable: His name and former affiliation are being used to sell WalMart. Right here. To us.

The Mayor of Yucca Valley has called a special meeting of the Town Council on Thursday, May 15, 2008, at the Yucca Valley Senior Center, at 7:30 p.m. Below is a copy of the meeting agenda.
The purpose of this historic meeting is to discuss clear-cutting (mass grading) of development sites in Yucca Valley.
In addition, Residential Minimum Lot Size will be discussed as it relates to spot (footprint) grading instead of clear-cutting.
